The Lost Art of Midi & Serial Control

I’m currently thinking about writing a short reference / history on midi and serial show commands and how they seem to be falling to the way side with tcp/ip and DMX. This thought comes from a recent project I  just finished for a client demo. The constant push to be able to control everything seamlessly from the ipad seems to be gathering momentum, for this particular project I had to write some custom interface scripts to make calls out to older audio decks and video decks that required midi and and serial. While I must admit it took a bit to remember the old <CR> returns, I realized what a robust and simple language this was and why haven’t we stuck to it. Simply it works, the deck sees “F0 7F deviceID 06 44 06 01 00 00 00 00 00 F7 and knows to locate itself and get ready. What will the next generation of techs do when its not in the drop down box or cant be natively controlled by DMX or over TCP/IP. Thoughts?

43 consecutive days, 149+ shows, 550 lbs of pyrotechnics, 3 projection booths full of the latest laser and video gear, and over 40,000 inspired observers

Take a project that originally was conceived over 2 years ago and supposed to have 6 months of production time, now fast forward 2 years and give us 6 weeks to produce a show fulled to the brim of the latest and greatest technology.

Now thrown in my nature to go big or go home, and render all of the content into a resolution that is 4 times that of 1080p and play it all back at 59.94FPS, and you have a ticking time bomb.

At the Essex Park and Ride at 8:00 Hundreds Joined in force to get down and dirty along the shorelines of Back River and the “flats”, Tires, Trash, Bikes, Freezers, Sewing Machines were among may items removed from the watershed. Thanks to all who came out to make this the largest river Clean Up in Maryland. If you need high res photos without the watermark please send me an e-mail with the file number.

Thanks to all of the 2009 Popsicle Plungers

Well the weather cooperated, they had a record turn-out, and raised $20,000! According to James Frank, MPNC Organizer “This year’s proceeds will be used to fund trail construction in our park”  It was a fun time had by all, the festivities began a noon, with DJ Nick Hock, playing today’s best mix, and he was joined at 1:00 by Unity Reggae Band, who provided the live musical entertainment.  The party kept rolling and at 1:30 Nick turned the mic over to Radio Personality Steve Rouse as he got the plunge Underway.

A Great time was had by all. Hope to see you there Next Year!

Soccer and music fans of all ages came out to 1 st Mariner Arena for the Baltimore Blast’s ROCK-N-WORSHIP Christian Youth Night featuring TFK.

The Baltimore Blast got the train rolling, by their win over  the Monterrey La Raza, Then the post game Concert set the night into a runaway train with Intelligent Lighting and Pyro Provided By Image Engineering in a creative partnership with Premier Events Group providing the Lighting Design & Programing for the concert.   Photo’s taken By Genell Canty, Image Engineering’s Pyro Designer.
